Warm greetings from sunny Victoria! The month of September had been the warmest and brightest of the summer, with BBQ’s, outdoor events and markets in full force. Food and drink festivals were plentiful in Victoria this month, with the annual Great Canadian Beer Fest, Harvest Festival, and the “Eat Here Now Festival”, event goers could sample amazing treats from all over the island. Enjoying the warmth till the last minute, everyone is bracing themselves for the beauty of fall, and are finally pulling those wool sweaters out of the closet!

This month, we are very happy to announce that Carolyn, one of our great teachers, has joined the GEOS team once again. She is teaching Level 5 in the morning and Level 2 in the afternoon.

We would also like to welcome Jamie, Korean intern student, who is a former GEOS student. We are very happy to work with her!!!

ESL Staff Instructor for GEOS Victoria

Hope is a career professional with diverse teaching experience.  She is TESL Canada certified and she has a Master’s degree in Education.  English is her specialty; she have taught English as a Second Language to university students and adults in both Canada and in Asia.  She is also a second language learner so she is well aware of the challenges involved in learning another language.

Hope has extensive experience creating interesting, interactive materials to assist students in their learning.  As a GEOS instructor she develops special lessons for her students.  She’s always careful to make sure that her students feel comfortable and valued.

Every afternoon that we had an activity scheduled proved to be sunny and satisfying! We began our monthly set of activities setting and spiking volleyballs at the famous Rooftop Beach Volleyball Courts at the Strathcona Hotel. The next week, we played in the fountains, and toasted delicious hot dogs in beautiful Beacon Hill Park. Next we enjoyed a tour of UVIC’s beautiful campus, and a fall walk through the Mystic Vale Forest, where we found amazing autumn leaves. We’ll finish off the month playing Laser tag, and look forward to October, where we’ll be attending local Hockey games, take a tour of a local brewery, and have a spooky Halloween party!

Student Testimonial for ESL Course at GEOS Victoria

I'm extremely surprised that I can write down these sentences.
Actually, when I just came to Victoria, I was so nervous and confused because I couldn't communicate in English very well.

Also, I had a terrible grammar skill. However, everything has been changed after I started to study at GEOS.
I remember my first day at GEOS; I was not saying anything because I was a little bit shy, but others talked to me first, soon we became good friends.

In addition, all teachers in GEOS give courage to every student.
The one thing I like the most about GEOS is their 'ENGLISH-ONLY RULES'.
Consequently I could improve my English skills a lot in a month.
I think, GEOS has everything such as good friends, good teachers, and good system of studying.
I've been having a good time and I believe that I’ll have a great experience at GEOS for the rest of time.

The next GEOS TESL Program starts on October 11, 2011.  This course aims to provide language teaching training to individuals who want to teach English as a Second or Foreign Language.  The program will develop linguistic and cultural competencies in students intending to use their skills in their home country or abroad as teachers of English.  The program is broken down into modules that focus on both theory as well as practice.

Students will learn how to prepare a lesson, and issues related to planning selection of materials to teach.  They will discuss issues related to teaching specific language skills (i.e. listening and speaking, reading and writing, and grammar) and will be given an opportunity to prepare lessons and teach in front of peers.  They will receive feedback from their teachers and peers and will develop an ability to assess their own teaching skills.

Ghosts of Victoria Festival

The Ghosts of Victoria Festival
Victoria is British Columbia’s most haunted place. Ghosts and goblins abound in the capital city – and not just at Halloween. If you want a “spirited” visit to Victoria at any time of the year, there are many attractions to see. As Halloween approaches, the Ghosts of Victoria Festival provides even more ghostly activities. The Ghosts of Victoria Festival is held over the last two weeks of October each year, with many activities to choose from Ghostly Walks, Ghost Bus-tours, Haunted Trolley Tours, Ross Bay Cemetery Ghost Tour, "Voices from the Past" at St. Ann's Academy, "Fall of the House of Usher" at Craigdarroch Castle, Maritime Museum Ghost Tours, Pumpkin Art in Oak Bay, Galey Farms. Enjoy spooky Victoria!
