Greetings from GEOS Victoria! Spring is in the air despite the unusually chilly temperatures in the city of gardens. The blooms fought hard to make an appearance and uphold our reputation, so we got out and enjoyed the weather too however, we weren’t able to bust out the shorts and sleeveless shirts quite yet. The Easter Bunny promises to bring the real spring weather along with a whole new group of students to which we’re really looking forward.
To stay in touch and see what we’re up to on a daily basis, friend GEOS Victoria on Facebook! In addition to browsing our pictures, you can stay in touch with past, current and future students and even get help with your English. Our Student Services Coordinator would be pleased to answer your questions. See you on the wall!
Kyle has been a teacher at GEOS Victoria for almost 6 years! She has a degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Victoria and a TESL Canada certificate. Her studies and love of culture inspired her to travel to China where she taught for one year.
The qualities that Kyle admires most in a teacher are knowledge, passion, humor, and presence. She endeavors to emulate these characteristics daily. She loves to be in a classroom that is lively and involved and to engender this atmosphere comes easily to her because she genuinely enjoys interacting with her students. She loves getting to know their personalities, experiences, concerns, likes and dislikes. She chooses material for her classes by utilizing not only the text book and grammar books, but also current events, newspapers, television, movies, and other realia that is available in this beautiful city.
This month, we welcomed a new English teacher, Caitlin. She teaches our level 1 in the morning; and, you will be very happy to hear that Mike, one of our great teachers is back with us once again. Let’s join Mike’s business class!!!
The GEOS Victoria Business English elective will open on April 25th. This course is designed to prepare advanced students in Levels 5 and 6 to use English in their present or future work situation. Special focus is given to the development of key vocabulary, social language and practical functions within a business context. Students will be given plenty of opportunities to practice realistic tasks in class, and will be given the tools and skills they will need in common professional situations.
Students will learn how to give well organized, formal presentations, understand and respond appropriately to professional telephone calls, emails and letters and use appropriate language in social situations. Students also work to create a cover letter and resume suitable for local job/volunteer placement. Additionally, students will develop practical interview skills to prepare them for their own job search.

Currently we have 11 Nationalities represented in the school among our 164 students. We extend a warm welcome to all the students studying English with us!
I made the decision to study in GEOS Victoria because the people in my Agency told me that if I wanted to focus only on learning English was a really good option because here the people only speaks this language and not also French as in another cities from Canada as well they said that the weather is the best in this country (which is true), they also told me that in Victoria the people is so friendly and finally when I saw the photos of this beautiful city I just feel in love with.
I like the weather, Victoria is an English-Style city surrounded by nature, but mostly I love it because you can breathe freedom and respect between people of different cultures and also Victoria is a place safe to live. I studied at GEOS for 9 months and I have earned so many things. First of all I could improve my English level. Then I meet many people from different cultures that it´s very interesting as well. I Knew wonderful teachers who gave me some advises that have been very usesful to me in my learning process. For me it was definitely to meet many people from teachers, GEOS´s team members and students some of whom I can have the honor to say that they became very important people during my stay in Victoria and the most important thing, they still being good friends. They always supported me in many related issues generated not only with the school but also with my stay in Victoria for example on how to open a bank account or find a new place to live when I decided to change home-stay, also they helped me with procedures to deal my extension of my permission to continue studying for 6 more months. GEOS is a great school with very professional staff and great environment where you can feel at home and very comfortable.
Please keep the good environment, always listen to the students and their needs and needs as you have done so far, always updated and especially say thanks once again for all the support I received from you. Thank you, GEOS Victoria!

While the rest of Canada was still in hibernation, the GEOS Victoria April Activities Calendar was packed with Outdoor Spring Activities. We started off the month with a trip to see the beautiful bountiful blooms at Victoria’s world-famous Butchart Gardens, then played some games in Beacon Hill Park and dyed some Easter eggs (as well as our fingers!). To wrap it all up we bid adieu to winter by going for one last ice skate and welcomed summer with a round of mini-golf at the end of the month!
May is sure to bring even more fun in the sun, such as kayaking on the Gorge Waterway, and a scenic bike tour among other events. Island life is good!
Victoria Day parade Victoria Day celebrates Queen Victoria's birthday. Canada is still a member of the Commonwealth Nations, of which the Queen is head. Victoria Day is always on a Monday, and thus the holiday is part of a long weekend, which is commonly referred to as the Victoria Day Weekend. The day is celebrated with Victoria's largest 3 hour parade, complete with marching bands, floats, clowns and more. Over 120,000 spectators watch this popular annual event in person and on television. The parade starts at Mayfair Mall at 9:00am and proceeds along Douglas Street, finishing at the intersection of Douglas and Humboldt downtown.
